  6. Walesa have shadowboxed for months over the pace and direction
  7. of political and economic reform. Now they will battle openly
  8. as the two main candidates in an election on Nov. 25 that will
  9. produce Poland's first popularly chosen President.

  11.     The election was called when General Wojciech Jaruzelski
  12. decided last month to cut short his six-year term as President.
  13. Walesa, 47, who has long made no secret of his ambitions,
  14. immediately declared his intention to run. Mazowiecki, 63, once
  15. one of Walesa's main advisers, entered the race last week.
  16. Mazowiecki's announcement ended speculation that he might cede
  17. the presidency to Walesa in the hope of halting the country's
  18. growing political polarization. In the end, Mazowiecki was
  19. swayed by the argument that Walesa, who forced Jaruzelski to
  20. resign, should not be allowed simply to steamroller his way into
  21. power. No matter what the outcome, the fight between Walesa,
  22. the former shipyard electrician, and Mazowiecki, the former
  23. newspaper editor, ends the alliance between workers and
  24. intellectuals that helped topple communism in Poland.
